A Day Near the Beartooths

I went on a drive yesterday to photograph snowy mountains and creeks, scope out future locations for camping, and enjoy the scenery. The Beartooth Highway is closed for winter about 12 miles south of Red Lodge, but that 12-mile section is beautiful. Fluffy unplowed roads are fun, but had someone not been there first, I would not have driven them. The risk while being alone is not something I want to chance.

The Cooney Dam and Reservoir area are nearby, and it was quite a sight with all the ice fishing tents scattered about the frozen surface. This photograph was taken from this location, looking south at the Beartooth Mountains. The day began sunny, but the next snowstorm rolled in over the mountains early afternoon.
